An asylum seeker and her one-year-old baby were sexually assaulted and stoned during a racially-aggravated attack by a group of young men.
Police are hunting the man who carried out the sex attack on the 33-year-old Algerian woman, and have appealed to other members of the group to help trace him.
The incident happened in broad daylight on a cycle path in the Yoker area of Glasgow, where asylum seekers are said to be well integrated with the local community.
Four white men approached the woman, who was pushing her baby son in a pram, made racist remarks, threw stones at her and kicked her.
One of them then exposed himself, indecently assaulted the woman and attempted to perform an indecent act on her one-year-old son.
She also had her headscarf torn form her head.
Her attacker is described as a white male, aged 20 to 25, with very short hair. He is tall and slim and was wearing white and blue tracksuit trousers.
Police have been examining CCTV footage of the area, and have recovered the woman’s pram, which she left behind while fleeing with her child.
It is thought that the woman reported the incident, which happened on April 3, a week late because she was traumatised.
She lives in the area, which has been praised in the past for its efforts to integrate asylum seekers.
On several occasions, local residents have joined campaigns to prevent the forcible removal of failed asylum seekers.
Det Insp Andy McWilliam said: “There appears to be a racial element to the assault. We want the young men who were not involved in this part of the assault to identify this individual.
”I would like to think that these people would be so disgusted by this incident that they would come forward. The one-year-old baby was assaulted but there was no sexual act committed against him.
”This was a particularly harrowing ordeal for the woman and her son. I would urge the other males in this group to assist the police in identifying the male responsible.”
Heard this on Radio Scotland today. The news stopped me in my tracks in shock.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely beggars belief.
It sure does. My only reservation, if you can call it that, is the week delay in reporting it, and that the pram was still there. But, if it is all above board, then it is indeed shocking.
ReplyDeleteArseholes like this need their heads nailing to the deck.
ReplyDeleteIt beggars belief the depths that what some people, loosely regarded as "human" can sink to.
