Iain Dale rumbled again in dodgy exclusive

There is an interesting story about a Daily Mirror journalist attempting to get a job at the Conservative Party HQ. I first saw the story on Iain Dale's Diary where he is claiming an exclusive. Given that Iain Dale's thrust is that of deception, and that it is wrong. Why does he claim an exclusive today when I then discover from conservativehome that the story was reported last night in Tory Diary?

Iain, the Daily Mail article which reports this was published at 8:34pm. You published your article at 9:07pm. Therefore, is it really your exclusive or not?

Update: A possible explanation is time zone difference between Switzerland and England.

  1. Both Dale and CH got it from Mail early editions - guaranteed reliable!! - but Dale did I think nick it first as he is away with the gnomes in Switzerland.

They may henceforth use "Blogsclusive" (tm LOL) when referring to anything they nick from MSM.

  3. Hmmm all very strange. Iain Dale posts about this story on his blog at 21:07. An hour earlier at 20:13 Dizzy receives a txt telling him to read the post that has not been posted yet. Dizzy read the post and posts about it 20:21 linking directly to the post that will not yet be written for 46 minutes. The Mail on Sunday posts its story at 20:34. This is 13 minutes after Dizzy posted about it, having used Iain Dale as source even though Iain hadn't written it yet.

Clearly someone has a time machine!

  4. Chris: Yes, I think your blogsclusive is a better term to use in the blogosphere where it appears first in the MSM. I suspect that Iain didn't get it first as the MSM have not credited him as being the source which they tend to do but not always.

Blogger is American and uses GMT and does not allow for our BST hour change. Therefore, my posts are an hour behind unless I go into options and change it manually.

dizzy: The Mail on Sunday link I went to did not source Iain. But, I know that they sometimes update and new text is added and old text removed.

Nice try by the Mirror. Like you posted, I doubt that it will come to anything legally. If the Beeb gets away with a reporter joining the Prison Service, I cannot see the Mirror facing any legal sanction. Credit to the geek who sussed her out...
