Cameron labelled liar over thug story
By Jan Disley 08/10/2007
David Cameron has been branded a liar after telling a story about a pupil attacking a teacher.
Delegates at last week's conference heard the Tory leader recount the tale of violence at a secondary school as he called for headteachers to be given more power to enforce discipline.
Angry school governors claim his account is not true - but Cameron insisted yesterday that it was.
At the conference he told party members he spent a couple of days helping teachers at a school in the north of England.

And he claimed: "I stopped a boy as he was running in to his GCSE exam and I said 'What's the problem?'.
"And he said 'Well, I got completely p****d last night, I've got a hangover and I'm going to flunk this exam'. I asked a teacher about him and I was told he'd attacked a teacher before and he trashed a classroom."
Mr Cameron did not name the school but it has since been identified as Kingswood Art College, Hull, where he spent two days as a class assistant in May.
Now governors have denied the alleged violence ever took place and demanded an apology.
Anita Harrison said: "It is an appalling allegation, one he will come to regret. I've been a governor for five years and we hear about any serious breaches of discipline. It could not be more serious than attacking a teacher and trashing a classroom but nothing like that has happened."
Fellow governor Ray Drayton added: "Nothing like this has ever come before the board."
Tackled on BBC1's Andrew Marr Show, the Opposition leader insisted: "What I said to the conference is absolutely how it happened."
Kingswood head Nicole Swallow was unavailable for comment.

ReplyDeleteIn my experience, school staff (including governors) will always deny that there are any problems at their school since the introduction of school league tables.
ReplyDeleteMy own son was targeted by an older boy/thug and was starting to develop some real anger and frustration problems at home. The school insisted that it was just "over entheusiastic play".
David Cameron in this instance could be telling the truth.
Two outcomes 1. Politico lies and no one is suprised by that(usual claims of mis information etc...)
ReplyDelete2. School lies over bullying/violence problem again no one suprised by that(usual claims of mis information etc)
Mr Cameron is full of shit, then again so is all of his party. The average age of a Tory supporter at the party get-together was 78.
ReplyDeleteMr Cameron the saviour of Britain.
Whatever you think of the other parties, Cameron couldn't run a pub raffle.
Whilst I would never accuse an MP of over-egging (John Prescott and Edwina Currie always spring to mind when I type that phrase), I was alerted by the word 'flunk'. Having left school 600 years ago is this a common word? The last time I heard it was in Death of a Salesman. I thought it was a US term.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing that makes me think that it might have some veracity is that he names the school which leads him open to this checking. It is true that some schools close their eyes to problems. Indeed a school that says it has no bullying problem is in denial and cetainly does have one.
Cameron could have used the age old trick of saying that he had received a letter from one of his constituents who said that.....and he cannot name for obvious reasons.
It is also possible that the lad was taking the piss out of the Eton Tory Boy.
Taking the piss out of Cameron wouldn't take much doing.
ReplyDeleteI suspect he said pissed so he sounded hip and cool.
But he's a snob and a bloody rich one at that.
He has no connection with most people.
Get back on your horse and savage a few foxes.
