Police get £60,000 criminal cash
Nearly £60,000 seized from criminals will fight crime in Devon and Cornwall.
The money allocated for Devon and Cornwall Police is part of £5.4m for forces across England and Wales.
The money was recovered between July and September 2008 and compares with just over £3.7m paid out in the same quarter in the previous year.
More than £33m of criminal assets were confiscated in the three months last year, half of which is to be shared between police, prosecutors and courts.
It follows an incentive scheme introduced in 2006 which allows the police and recovery agencies to retain half of all cash they seize from criminals.
Tax exile Lord Laidlaw gave £100,000 to Tories in 2008
The money was donated by Lord Laidlaw, who avoids paying tax in Britain because he lives in Monaco.
The businessman was awarded a peerage in 2004 on the condition that he revoked his status as a tax exile.
The 65-year-old decided to take leave of the House of Lords.
Bright vests for offenders call
Offenders doing community service should be made to wear high visibility clothing so they can be more easily identified, a Labour MSP has said.
Comment: I fail to see why the Tory Party should be funded by the proceeds of crime. The government should seize the assets of the likes of Lord Laidlaw and Lord Ashcroft and collect the tax owed. Furthermore, instead of wearing ermine both should be made to wear high-visibility vests as pictured.
