Ex-convicts protect tourists in Naples
Naples has come up with an innovative way of protecting tourists from street crime and the mafia – enlisting ex-convicts to escort them around the city.
Around 70 former prisoners have been recruited to help visitors evade bag snatchers and pickpockets and navigate the southern Italian city's notoriously dangerous traffic.
"Who better knows the risks of this town?" said Corrado Gabriele, the official from the Campania region who came up with the idea.
Jointly financed by Campania and the European Union, the project is intended to make visitors feel safe in the streets and alleys of a city which has long had an edgy reputation.
We already run a similar scheme with ex-cons here in Britain - they call themselves "The Police Force"
