35% of children locked up unnecessarily
A third of young offenders locked up before they reach 15 are detained unnecessarily despite Government pledges, Barnardo’s, the children’s charity, has warned.
The study suggests almost 200 children a year are held in custody even though they do not meet the criteria.
The findings come as a group of MPs said custody is no deterrent for young offenders and should only be used as a last resort.
It follows a disclosure by The Daily Telegraph that the details of more than 300 children a day are being loaded on to the DNA database.
Almost 1.1 million youngsters aged between 10 and 17 have had their profiles recorded by the police since 2000, with a large proportion of them under the age of 15.
