Should the Lockerbie bomber be freed?

As the only man convicted of the the 1988 Lockerbie bombing could be released from prison, today you're talking about whether people convicted of serious crimes should ever be shown compassion. Does releasing criminals just before their death show humanity, or comtempt for the lives of their victims?
