Inmates 'take £1m worth of drugs'

Inmates 'take £1m worth of drugs'

The drugs problem in Britain's largest prison is at its worst ever, according to a new report.

The Independent Monitoring Board said illegal drugs with a street value of about £1m were used at south-west London's Wandsworth Prison each year.

It blamed corrupt staff, volunteers and contractors for smuggling it in.

If prisoners were allowed mobile phones, and punishments for possession of cannabis much reduced then these problems would not be such a big issue.

Courts hit by jail diarrhoea bug

An outbreak of sickness and diarrhoea at Wandsworth prison has led to severe disruption to court cases in London.

Some 370 inmates and "a small number of prison officers" have been laid low by the bug, the Ministry of Justice has confirmed.
