Labour holds the North against that Southern Tory Toff git Cameron

Cameron still faces battle to win big majority

David Cameron has failed to make a breakthrough in the north – a vital battleground if the Conservatives are to win a big Commons majority – and doubts continue over the Tory leader’s own appeal, an exclusive new poll has revealed.



In the biggest survey it has every carried out on Mr Cameron’s Conservatives, a YouGov poll for the Daily Telegraph found that the Conservatives still have considerable work to do if they are to win well at next year’s General Election.

While the results still show a comfortable overall Tory lead of 13 points over Labour, there is some uncertainty among all voters over the Conservatives.

Nearly two thirds are still unconvinced about whether there is substance behind David Cameron’s words. And more than half agree that it is hard to know what the Conservatives stand for at the moment.

A dangerous north-south divide shows Mr Cameron making progress in the south, but Labour still polls better in the north with 33 per cent backing the Tories and 35 per cent Labour. With few Tory gains expected in Scotland and only marginally more in Wales, Mr Cameron needs to improve his standing outside the south if he is to deliver a sizeable Conservative win.

Perhaps, the Tories would fare better if David Cameron and Boris Johnson swapped jobs?
