Pen for your thoughts and I love you to the bottom of your box of pencils

Pen for your thoughts and I love you to the bottom of your box of pencils

£2,000 for a pen I can well believe...

Pauline's pen

Baroness Neville-Jones, David Cameron's national security adviser, is refusing to show Mandrake her pen.

A pity as it must be quite a pen as it cost all of £2,000 and was a gift from the King of Bahrain.

She declares receipt of the gift in April in the Lords' Register of Interests.

A spokesman tells me: "With Arab countries, there's often a gift involved. It's her job to go out and meet any number of people."

However, £500,000 for a box of pencils just because they formed part of a piece of artwork is just a load of old cobblers. In fact, just like a lot of Damien Hirst's so-called art...

How much is a box of pencils worth? Fifty pence? £3.99 if the pencils have rubbers on the ends? Well, if they're part of a Damien Hirst art installation, the value is £500,000.
