Ann Widdecombe defects to the Lib Dems...

Apparently...

Ann Widdecombe: Conservative party conference 2000...

"Idle prisons are breeding grounds for the disease of crime. We will move towards a full working day in all prisons, based on self-financing workshops that take on real work which real employers want in the real world. Prisoners' wages will go towards the cost of their upkeep, the support of their families, savings to give them a start when they leave prison, and reparations to the victims of crime".

Compare and contrast with Lib Dem policy 2010...

"Liberal Democrats believe we need to make prison work effectively – at the moment, it simply doesn’t. Too many prisoners are simply left in prison to do very little on short-term sentences – which isn’t helpful in rehabilitating them and doesn’t do anything to help recompense victims or society. We would make sure prisoners work – paying nearer to the market rate, while ensuring they pay tax, national insurance and child support. They would also, crucially, have to make contributions to a Victims’ Compensation Fund and make savings for their release. This would mean they’d not only gain skills for work, but budgeting experience and a sense of responsibility".

Nick Clegg, you don't leave old style politics behind by adopting a Tory politician's approach from 10 years ago!

Given that the Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary of State for Justice, David Howarth, stood down on 6 April 2010, and Nick Clegg has yet to announce his replacement we cannot judge whether he or she will be any match for dumb Jack Straw and dumber Dominic Grieve!
