The imprisoned Russian tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky has gone on a hunger strike to draw attention to what he claims are improper court rulings against suspects charged with economic crimes.
In an open letter to the chairman of the Supreme Court, Khodorkovsky said Russia's courts were ignoring recent legal changes that allowed people charged with economic crimes to avoid pre-trial detention.
President Dmitry Medvedev spearheaded the amendments, which were brought into effect earlier this year, after a young, high-profile lawyer died in 2009 while in detention. The changes allow people charged with committing white-collar crimes to be released on bail.
