Uganda Government News: Allow prisoners and people in the Diaspora to vote

Human rights activists have renewed calls to the Electoral Commission to allow prisoners and Ugandans in the Diaspora to vote in the forth coming elections.
The Executive Director of the Foundation for Human Rights Initiative, Livingston Sewanyana says it is government mandate to ensure all citizens exercise their rights to elect their leaders through the vote.
Sewanyana explains that since the constitution is clear on voting rights, the civil society should play its role in pushing for reforms from government to enable all citizens participate in the country’s democratic processes.
He also calls the civil society to fight intimidation and harassment of voters. Ssewanyana says in order to have free and fair elections in 2011, the process should not be encumbered by undue pressure from any candidate against their opponents.
