Selling justice shorts: Even 75 hours Community Service is too severe

Selling justice shorts: Even 75 hours Community Service is too severe

The 5 months prison sentence handed down to the woman guilty of handling a pair of shorts stolen during the riots was excessive. Therefore, it has come as no surprise that the sentence was quashed upon appeal and a different sentence invoked. However, I still think that 75 hours unpaid Community Service is too steep. Given that time is money, were she paid at the NMW it would be approximately £450. So far I have been unable to discover the value of the shorts in question. Even in the unlikely event that they are valued at £45, the punishment would still be 10 x the value. Perhaps, a fine would have been more appropriate?

Bearing in mind that some MPs caught fiddling their expenses got away with simply repaying the amount they had stolen, whilst others were only asked to repay a fraction of the loot they had stolen.
