'Ministers put Olympics ahead of human rights'

'Ministers put Olympics ahead of human rights'

"Ministers have been accused of putting the Olympics ahead of human rights after summoning campaigners to a secret Westminster meeting before the torch relay through London's streets".

In an ideal world politics and sport should remain totally separate issues. China has an appalling human rights record. However, what is less known is that the UK has the worst record of human rights violations in Europe as adjudged by the European Court of Human Rights. It is 3 years since the ECtHR found that the UK is violating convicted prisoners human rights by denying them the vote. In this case it would appear that the government is putting everything ahead of prisoners human rights. Sometimes legitimate protest is the only way forward to highlight the injustice of human rights violations. The Olympics is a celebration. It should not be used to hide injustice like a table cloth covering a table.
