Prisoner suicides on the increase

According to BBC Ceefax,

"There has been a significant increase in the number of prisoners who have killed themselves in jails in England and Wales, figures have shown.

So far this year, 50 inmates have taken their own life, compared to 67 for the whole of 2006.

Penal reform campaigners say this is a reflection of the pressures on staff because of prison overcrowding.

The Prison Service argues it has improved staff training and implemented new procedures".

"Now I wonder why this is.... could it be the fact that four people are sharing a cell built to house one or is it something else which we are missing?....... Who knows?
