Former Metropolitan policeman jailed for drug plot

A former Metropolitan Police detective has been jailed for 23 years for his part in a £200m cocaine-smuggling plot.

Michael Daly, 49, who is already serving eight years behind bars for a similar conspiracy, was "driven by greed", police said.

Daly, who admitted playing a key role in the plot, was sentenced at Blackfriars Crown Court in London.

Three other men - Perry Wharrie, Martin Wanden and Joe Daly - were convicted in Cork, Ireland.

A fourth man, Gerard Hagan, was jailed after pleading guilty to being involved in the plot.

Given the amount of drugs being smuggled into prisons, will it be business as usual?

One tiny, inadvertent slip and a man's years and years of selfless service to the community go up in smoke. There's gratitude for you. (I'd love to know what it feels like for a policeman being banged up.)

Charles: Back in the early 1970s I used to be a paid bodyguard for a bent copper inside. We became quite close, I liked him, and asked him what it was like for him to serve time. Anyone in that position feels the pain of confinement more than somebody who has entered the system via care homes.

...or public schools (the care homes of the upper classes). Best go on the numbers, I'd have thought?
