Ministry of Justice announces prison overcrowding eased by one vacancy

Ministry of Justice announces prison overcrowding eased by one vacancy

Inmate found hanged in jail cell

A prisoner has been found hanged in his cell at HMP Manchester, the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) has confirmed.

Trevor Ramsey, 35, was on remand after being convicted of being in possession of drugs with intent to supply.

Ramsey, who was waiting to be sentenced, was declared dead just before 1800 GMT on Saturday.

"Staff and paramedics attempted to resuscitate him", said an MOJ spokesman. "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr Ramsey."

The prisons and probation ombudsman will carry out an investigation into the death.

I suspect that the inquiry will conclude that he hanged himself.

No hope. No dope. No rope. Scrub the last one...

Don't take me wrong Mr. Hirst, I am very disturbed by this news and very sad that this happening in 2009. However, as a portuguese, who has seen the International Amnesty reports being distorted by the UK Press, for the last one year and a half, I feel like slapping their faces.
This doesn't make the horrible/sad events (suicides) in portuguese prisons go away, unfortunately it shows that the problem is transnational and something must be done. Maybe it's time that an European movement comes forward in order to study what is wrong with prisons or inprisionments that make that so many people take their lives - I know that the primary goal of prison is to punish, but in Portugal we maintain the hipocritic principle that they are meant to social reinsertion,...
I know there is an European Observatory, but that doesn't seem to be close enough in order to make a change - I may observe birds but they keep go against electrical cables :-(
