Toad of Toad Hull
Row over Hull council funding for Larkin toad project
A row has broken out over funding for giant model toads which will be placed around Hull to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Philip Larkin's death.
Hull City Council is funding the arts project in honour of Larkin's two poems 'Toads' and 'Toads Revisited'.
Hull North MP Diana Johnson said she believed the move was a waste of money.
The council said it had donated £200,000 towards events to mark the anniversary and the toad project would help boost the city's profile.
Larkin, who lived in Hull for 30 years before his death in 1985, combined a celebrated writing career with his role as librarian at Hull University.
Other commemorative events include the commissioning of a statue of the poet which will be unveiled in the city in December.
