Freedom is taking a battering under kneejerk New Labour
Jack Straw's attack on the Human Rights Act is sly populism of the worst kind, and in keeping with his party's statist tradition

Today is the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The declaration rests on a simple, radical insight: human rights are indivisible and universal - or they are nothing at all. So Jack Straw's headline-grabbing declaration that Britain's Human Rights Act has become a "villain's charter", and must be "rebalanced", should be seen for what it is: a rejection of the simple notion that all of us, no matter how rich or poor, how powerful or weak, possess certain inalienable rights.
Comment: Surely, this is not the same Nick Clegg who overturned the LibDem policy of supporting votes for all convicted prisoners?
A mixture of law, politics, autobiography and humour. Once described as "The Devilish Advocate" (Guardian), I do have the ability to provoke a response. Sometimes it comes from someone who uses a thought process, and sometimes from jerks usually associated with the knee.
