First super-prison likely to be built in London

First super-prison likely to be built in London

Britain's first US-style super-jail is likely to be built in London, ministers have suggested.

"Jack Straw, the Justice Secretary, wants the new Titan prisons to ease the chronic overcrowding in Britain's jails, which are already full to bursting.

A Government consultation document strongly hints that the first Titan will be in London, because of a 13,600 shortfall in prison places predicted for the area by 2014.

It says: "We will focus attention, as far as possible, on London and the surrounding areas"".

Given the evidence that these massive institutions do not work, one has to wonder if Jack Straw has lost his marbles?

In addition, building these will not ease overcrowding but add to the crisis.

I'm surprised they didn't do that with the dome...

I like that they're "US-style" prisons. This is what we've managed to add to the architectural world. Fantastic. I also like that the prison officials are adopting US-style thinking: planned overcrowding. What the--? And in the same breath, they talk about reducing re-offending...I've heard that one before. Pull the other one.
