Brixton Prison’s station wins honours at the Sony Radio Awards
Few people attending last night’s awards show will have listened to it - but that didn’t stop the in-house radio station of Brixton Prison scooping two prestigious honours for its programmes made on the inside.
In the biggest surprise of the night, Electric Radio, which broadcasts to the south London jail’s 800 inmates, took two gold gongs at the Sony Radio Awards, in the listener participation and community categories.
The station took bronze in the interview award, finishing an honourable runner-up to Feargal Keane for a tête-à-tête with Jonathan Aitken, the Tory cabinet minister, who was jailed for perjury. It was also narrowly pipped to one of the premiere categories, the speech award, taking bronze to the gold given to Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode, of BBC 5 Live.
