Prison overcrowding is detrimental to our criminal justice system.
Whether or not there is enough prison places for “serious…offenders” – as the Justice Ministry claim they “will always provide” – prison overcrowding exerts enormous pressure on prison staff and can undermine their ability to deal with ‘serious’ offenders. I work as a campaigner for the Howard League for Penal Reform and our research has produced some worrying revelations: across the country, 12,000 prisoners are being held two to a cell for one; overcrowded prisons mean prisoners are more likely to be imprisoned further from home – away from their families and at greater cost to the tax payer.
