The BBC reports: Irish army triple killer released from prison
A former Irish soldier who killed three colleagues in Lebanon in 1982 has been released from prison in County Antrim.
Michael McAleavey has served 27 years of a life sentence.
He was freed on a life licence which means that if he breaches the conditions of his release he will be recalled to prison.
It is understood that one of these conditions is that he does not speak to the media.
I am surprised to hear that the Parole Commissioners for Northern Ireland have imposed an unlawful life licence condition upon Mr McAleavey. That is, it breaches his human rights under Article 10 of the European Convention of Human Rights. As I challenged the media ban on serving prisoners, and won the case, "ignorance of the law is no excuse" as far as the Parole Commissioners are concerned!
