Paralysed sixth-former awarded record £17.5m payout after car accident
A sixth-former, Chrissie Johnson, who was paralysed for life in a car accident has been awarded a record multi-million pound payout from the High Court.
The "beautiful smiling" schoolgirl was 16 when the car she was travelling in collided with a lorry, near Chipping Ongar, Essex in November 2006.
Miss Johnson, now 20, was left completely paralysed from a catastrophic brain injury she suffered in the accident, which cut short her promising sporting career.
Miss Johnson, who will always need a wheelchair, is now fully dependent on nursing care for all activities. She can move one of her arms and communicate with others.
On Thursday the High Court, sitting in London, awarded her more than £17.5 million in compensation.
The payout, which will be used to cover her care costs for life, is believed to a record payout for a personal injury case.
Some of the money will go towards paying for a new home for Miss Johnson, which has been specially designed to meet her needs.
