Head teacher who suffered stress from racism accusations wins £400,000 damages
This is compensation culture gone mad. The former head teacher decided to take early retirement, then claim for the wages she would have received and pension had she continued to work. Whilst she may have had an unpleasant experience by all of this, I suspect that her ambulance chasing lawyer has gilded the lily somewhat. Given that the relatives of soldiers killed or soldiers seriously injured are only awarded half that amount, it makes a mockery of the whole system. In my view, £50,000 would have been a sufficient monetary award in a case like this.

Government seeks to limit loss of vote payout to prisoners
A deal has been struck between the UK and Scottish governments which will stop criminals receiving compensation for slopping out.
"Emergency laws are to be rushed through Westminster and Holyrood to introduce a one-year time bar by the end of June".
"But lawyer Tony Kelly accused the Scottish Government of being sore losers, and said other human rights claims could be caught up in the change".
Why won't they rush through legislation to allow prisoners their human right to vote?
And, will there be a provision to try and limit damages pay outs for loss of the vote? Presently, it is likely to cost between £60 and £120M.

A driver who caused the deaths of two men, after he bent down to pick up a mobile phone, has been jailed for six years at the High Court in Edinburgh.
That 6 years is halved with good behaviour in prison, 3 years is 18 months for each death. It's not very much is it? In my view, a car in the wrong hands is every bit an offensive weapon as is a gun or knife. Life is cheap. Either they need to raise the stakes in this kind of case, or lower the tariffs in cases of murder and manslaughter. A dead body is a dead body. And yet, it is almost acceptable to kill someone with a car when the courts only slap your wrists. Lord Ahmed's case shows just what a travesty the law is when justice takes second place to mobile phones.

The news is that there isn't any news but some will come along shortly
I did a radio interview for Viking FM this morning at 11, to be broadcast tomorrow on the news bulletins. The interviewer was Adam Westbrook, who also reads the news, and keeps an eye out on developing stories on my blog. The subject of the interview is the Prisoners Votes Case, the 3 legal challenges involved, and the possible impact upon the legal validity of the 4 June 2009 European Election.
When it goes out, I will get a podcast and upload it on to my blog.
Tomorrow at 10.30am the film crew will arrive to film a piece for the Politics Show on BBC1 on Sunday. The interviewer, political correspondent, Tim Iredale, will be covering in greater depth the same story as above.
I can also report that the Prison Reform Trust has submitted a Freedom of Information Act request for the government to publish the results of the consultation exercise into whether convicted prisoners should be allowed the vote.

Quackers duck thinks it is a dog
A nine-month-old duck has become a local celebrity in Dorset for her canine capers.
Essy, a Cherry Valley duck, thinks she is a dog and even has her own lead to go for walks around Bournemouth.
And then there is my dog Rocky who thinks he is a duck when people are feeding ducks in the local park, and approaches them for his share of the bread...

"Lyndon Coles, 45, was serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 15 years for the murder of Shane George in Hull in 1994.
Mr George, 21, was shot dead with a shotgun as he opened the door of his home in Coltman Street.
Coles [absconded] from Kirklevington Prison near Yarm, Cleveland, over the weekend. Humberside Police have urged the public not to challenge him".

The President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso has just said at a Downing Street Press Conference that he "regrets" the Conservative decision to pull out of the EPP. Quite what it has got to do with him, I am not sure. He works for the Commission, not the European Parliament. Perhaps he might like to pay more attention to the mismanagement and fraud which takes place within his own organisation, rather than commenting on who David Cameron chooses to ally the Tory Party with.

The European People's Party has always been engaged in monitoring the work of the European Commission, the main European institution that implements European Union policies. Thus, the EPP has always placed great emphasis on facilitating the appointment of Commissioners originating from our political family. In the most recent Commission, the EPP, the winner of the 2004 European Parliament elections, played a catalytic role in the appointment of Mr. Jose Manuel Barroso - a leading figure of the EPP family - as President of the Commission. The current Commission has a total of nine Commissioners, who originate from the EPP family:

An attempt to force the names of misbehaving judges into the open will be launched tomorrow in a groundbreaking freedom of information case.
More than 170 members of the judiciary have been disciplined for misconduct in the last 10 years. Ministers and the judiciary have for years steadfastly fought to keep their identities quiet.
I fail to see why judges and magistrates should be protected from being named and shamed.
An attempt to force the names of misbehaving judges into the open will be launched tomorrow in a groundbreaking freedom of information case.
