Gordon Brown has been in secret talks with the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), and appears to support ACPO's demand for locking up terror suspects indefinitely without charge. This is a worrying development. When a union of police chiefs has so much power that it has become uncontrollable and lobbying for its own interests, we need to be examining this group and subjecting it to democratic controls otherwise it becomes lawless. This is precisely what happened with Guantanamo Bay. As America is seeking to close Guantanamo Bay, we should not be opening up Britain to become a penal colony.
ACPO argues that civil liberty arguments are untenable in light of the evolving terror threat. However, this argument is one being advanced by draconian mentality.
Anyone interested in democracy and liberty should resist the Autumn Bill which Gordon Brown will try to get through Parliament. I do not believe that judicial oversight is any guarantee at all. There are tame judges who will simply rubber stamp loss of liberties providing it does not affect them personally.
