Iain Dale's Diary wakes up to the Great Flood in Hull

I was lucky in that my house was not affected by the recent great flood in Hull. However, my dog Rocky needs his daily walks and Pearson Avenue leading up to Pearson Park was flooded and impassable. The water was bad enough on its own, what made matters worse was that the sewers poured out its waste and the flood was a river of shit and the smell overpowering. Even when the flood subsided along Pearson Avenue the gutters remained lined with shit, and large areas of Pearson Park had lakes of sewage spoiling its beauty.

I had to go out and buy my tobacco from someone who brings it from abroad, and Ryde Street was ankle deep in flood water within seconds. Even my leather jacket could not withstand the downpour and I got soaked to the skin. Newland Avenue was blocked off by the police, and Victoria Avenue and Park Avenue were more like canals in Venice.

I did blog about it at the time here, and subsequently here, here and here. I even raised the issue in the comments at conservativehome.com here.

Eventually, Iain Dale has pulled his head out of his arse and covered the issue here. It was disappointing to read his sidekick, Mike Rouse, praising Iain Dale in the comments said: "I am pleased that a blogger at last has given this very big issue some coverage other than just in passing. I was uneasy with how the old media have been giving it so much while a lot of blogs carried on like nothing happened or used the disasters to highlight their own agendas.

Thank you for being genuine on this issue".

Westminister Village appears to be cut off from the world outside the M25. I am glad that you could eventually join the party.

Now, how about this issue? Perhaps, you could start asking questions why the NHS stopped staff claiming crisis leave during the flood crisis?

UPDATE: Is Gordon Brown making a monkey out of us offering peanuts?

Actually John he was on Sky News at 11.40 last night opposing 'hand-outs' from the government for those without insurance. I understand the argument that people should be insured, but common bloody humanity says those without should be helped in some way.

Typical Tory: Stand on your own two feet, and if you get the chance, stand on some other buggers as well.

Hi Bob: I ain't posh, I don't even have Ch5 let alone one of those dustbin lids on the side of my house enabling me to pick up Sky. Nor a TV Licence come to that...

I noted from Iain Dale's Diary that he had done an interview on Sky. I was not aware that he was against aid to those most hard hit, the poor. It just goes to show that the Tories do not really care and have not changed at all.

I'm nobody's sidekick, John. I was genuinely annoyed that few bloggers picked up on the issue and was glad when Iain did.

Hi Mike: I tried to post on your blog before you pulled the post down about the flood and bloggers but your password for posting would not let me post.

I hate to be ignorant but what is "crisis leave" and what does it have to do with the NHS?

Employees can claim crisis leave from employers which does not affect holidays or days off if for example a child in the family becomes ill. The NHS banned staff from taking crisis leave to sort out their devastated lives during the floods, but said that they could take days off in lieu or holidays instead.
