Magistrate breaks the law
A magistrate has been fined £50 and ordered to pay £50 court costs for dropping litter. Denise Hall who is a magistrate sitting at Hartlepool was caught throwing a cigarette end out of her car, and reported by council workers and she was issued with a fixed penalty notice. She refused to pay this and appeared before Hartlepool magistrates, by letter, and pleaded guilty. Her case "has now been referred to the local committee of the Lord Chancellor's Office and could face action for the offence". Damn right she should, and nothing short of being sacked will suffice. It's no big deal, I know, but these people set themselves up as being better than us and when it is shown that they are not then it would not be right for them to sit in judgement upon us. I cannot understand why she just did not pay the fixed penalty notice and have done with it. All she ended up doing was doubling her costs all to no avail.

That'll be because she knows that the local authorities tend to fold against a good proportion of people who challenge fixed penalty tickets. Luckily for us, she backed the wrong horse - someone must have known she was on the bench.
MECS: Thanks for the clarification.
