Taking liberties with images of sex

For a start, I think it is rather odd to lump together the subjects of criminal justice and immigration within the same Bill. But, that aside, it is the government's intention to introduce a new offence to deal with violent pornography which is quite disturbing to say the least. More so given that on the 5th of September 2006 Tony Blair stated that: "[T]here are areas in which the State, or the community, no longer has a role or, if it does have one, it is a role that is completely different. It is not for the State to tell people that they cannot choose a different lifestyle, for example in issues to do with sexuality". The proposed legislation is not compatible with the Human Rights Act 1998, in that the proposed interference would contravene human rights guaranteed under Articles 8 and 10 of the Convention. It is possessing images like this which the government is seeking to criminalise. I hope that enough MPs in the House of Commons and Lords in the House of Lords are able to distinguish the difference between real violence and fake violence.
