There are a couple of rather amusing articles in the Daily Telegraph comment section today. The first is by reformed Tory Party jailbird Jonathan Aitken which claims that a new Tory jail policy shows the way ahead out of the prison crisis. I popped into conservativehome and left this comment:
"What Tory prisons policy? David Davis (Dumb), Edward Garnier (Dumber), and Nick Herbert (even Dumber still).
Jonathan Aitken's article is well written, but it is totally meaningless.
Gordon Brown was not wrong-footed by David Cameron at PMQs, as one commenter has pointed out GBs statement referred to serious violent offenders, whereas DCs statement referred to violent offenders, the spin was the removal of the word "serious" to create a false impression.
"Davis's ideas for building drug rehab units inside enlarged prisons are already working at Mexico's Chihuahua jail, where recidivism has been cut from 90 to nine per cent since 2002". We have had drug rehab units in British prisons since 1995.
"The credibility that underpins the Tories' new prison policy is strong because of three key elements - hard work, collegiality and minimal spin".
The Tory Party has lost any sense of credibility with the electorate. The Labour government is aware what it must do to end the prison crisis, however, it is also aware that to implement it will not be well received by the electorate and is too scared to act.
The key element is neither hard work, collegiality, nor minimal spin. Jonathan Aitken is no expert in this field. It is laughable that Edward Garnier's "voyage of discovery" entailed taking "him to 25 prisons and more than 150 meetings with every imaginable category of prison specialists". It reminds me of the party going on a hike and the map reader holding the map upside down. All he needed to do was make two telephone calls".
The second article is by failed Tory "A" List candidate Iain Dale, advising the failed Tory Party, that it should use the failed ex-Tory Leader William Vague as the Deputy Leader of the Tory Party. Iain needs to be careful that he doesn't pee on his shoes whilst he is busy Willy watching...
