McCanns: The Guardian doesn't go far enough and the Daily Mirror goes too far
I don't think that Max Hastings has gone anywhere near far enough in attacking the media for its love affair with the McCanns, in this piece "I hang my head in shame at what my trade has made of the McCann story".
Just read this sickening bile which has come from the Daily Mirror. "Yesterday Kate McCann sobbed in despair as she sat alone in daughter Madeleine's pink-painted bedroom after returning to England". "The 39-year-old mum insisted on entering the room after flying home with husband Gerry, 39, and twins Sean and Amelie, two.
Gerry's mum Eileen, 67, said: "It was traumatic for her. I imagine she said a prayer."
"Kate stared straight ahead, tears streaming down her cheeks. Asked if she was relieved to go home she shrugged, looked down and said: "I suppose so."
"Hours later, to immeasurable grief, she walked into Madeleine's bedroom at the family home in Rothley, Leics, for the first time since the four-year-old vanished 130 days ago.
And as she crossed the threshold, the desolation, misery and suffering flooded out.
While sister-in-law Trish Cameron waited outside the pink-painted room Kate, 39, sat on the bed and, clutching Madeleine's favourite Cuddle Cat, sobbed her heart out".

Gerry's mother Eileen McCann, 67, told the Mirror: "Kate needed to go into Madeleine's room as soon as she got back.
"She wanted time in there alone. Trish went upstairs with her and waited outside to make sure she was all right.
"It was very traumatic for Kate. I can't imagine how sad she must have felt. Madeleine's clothes and toys were just the way they'd been left.
"Kate believes Madeleine is still alive and I imagine said a little prayer for her. Trish phoned me saying 'Kate's in Madeleine's room. She's really upset'."
Kate's aunt, Sheila Cowell, added: "This was the hardest thing Kate has ever had to do. Being back home and seeing Madeleine's bedroom again was so emotional for her. But she's a strong person and will pull through".
Yuk!

Why is it that people always complain when papers are nasty and vitriolic, but never when they're so manipulatively gushing? All that Mirror article is is propaganda, yet it's effectively being presented as proof of innocence. If anything ever comes to trial, I worry about the consequences of all this publicity. Had, hypothetically, it emerged in the press that the McCanns were, say, sex offenders, that could well have prevented them from getting a fair trial. Therefore they might have escaped one. What we get now, is a situation where a trial is unlikely to be fair, but only in terms of being unfair towards the prosecution case. So it would probably go ahead as normal. So the true person such a trial would be unfair against is actually Madeline herself.
Tim: That is precisely why I have highlighted it. I could hear the violins playing in the background, a sentimental and emotional tune to tug at the heartstrings. It was designed to get the sympathy vote. But, mine is firmly with Madeleine and not with either Gerry or Kate.
