Ministers confident of winning 42-day vote
Ministers are confident of getting parliamentary approval to extend the detention of terrorist suspects after signalling that they are prepared to make more concessions to MPs.
Gordon Brown wants to extend to 42 days the time police can hold suspects without charging them.
The proposal, which will go before the Commons next week, has triggered a Labour rebellion, with more than 50 backbench MPs thought to be ready to oppose the Government's proposals.
The scale of the revolt has forced ministers to offer sweeteners to Labour MPs and smaller parties.
I hope that confidence is misplaced!
