Former heroin addict spared jail

Former heroin addict spared jail

A judge has admitted taking a "significant risk" by allowing a man who carried out nearly 150 thefts and burglaries to stay out of prison.

Former drug addict Dean Weaver walked free from court after Judge Martin Picton said his "substantial progress" meant he could rehabilitate in freedom.

In October the judge told Weaver, 25, of Gloucester, he would not be jailed if he stayed drug-free for 12 weeks.

The city's crown court heard Weaver had lived up to his side of the bargain.

Negative samples showed he had not taken drugs since last year's hearing.

There's hope for the Criminal Justice System yet...

Nice to see a Judge using a bit of common sense, by allowing the lad a chance to re-habilitate himself outside of prison, where he would have been exposed to drugs.
Also it keeps the cost to society down by not sending him to prison.
Fingers crossed for the lad.

It does seem as though common sense has prevailed.

What about the people who have fallen victims to this lad's need to get money for drugs . I wonder if they are feeling justice has been done?

darwen- justice is done if he creates no future victims. Putting him inside so he loses his home, job and future would lead to future offending. Pick one - self-defeating vengeance or rehabilitation?

Prisonguru you need to know there are consquences if you go around robbing and even worse!

This lad is quite likely to drift back to his old ways once the heat is off him.
