Discharge Grant for ex-prisoners

Citizens' Advice claimed the current discharge grant of £46.75 - which has been fixed for the last decade - should be raised to more than £114.90.

The Home Office said the grant was only one "part of the work performed to resettle offenders."

On the other hand...

Iain Dale reports on the disturbing case of a corrupt MP who is on long term sick leave after getting her fingers caught in the till. Her constituents want her out now "She is, however, unlikely to do that as it would involve losing the £30k resettlement allowance she would be entitled to if she waited until a general election is called".

"The resettlement Grant may be claimed to help former MPs with the costs of adjusting to nonparliamentary life. It is payable to any Member who ceases to be an MP at a General Election. The amount is based on age and length of service, and varies between 50% and 100% of the annual salary payable to a Member of Parliament at the time of the Dissolution".

When I was discharged, I received about £90 which was 2 weeks allowance and had to last 3 weeks until Jobseekers allowance could be claimed.

While I can see the need to make provision for discharged prisoners to resettle, I have difficulty seeing any justification for MPs to get a large resettlement grant.

Surely, all MPs should get is Jobseekers allowance?
