Plans for 'giant' prison in Dagenham are scrapped
Plans for a prison in Dagenham with space for 1,500 inmates have been dropped because the cost of protecting it from flooding would be too high.
A Ministry of Justice spokesman said it had "carefully considered" the flood risk before coming to its decision.
Residents who fought a long campaign against the building of the jail - dubbed a 'giant prison' - at the site of an old Ford factory are jubilant.
Dagenham MP Jon Cruddas called it a "huge victory" for people power.

The whole of the UK is one big bloody prison.
James: I agree with that.
Interesting excuse the MoJ have given for not proceeding with this super jail in Dagenham, as the whole Ford plant is already behind flood protection?
I wonder if this is just an excuse to cover up the fact they haven't got the funding to go ahead with it.
Also coming just before a general election with a sitting NuLabor MP?
BB: Certainly lack of funding led to the scrapping of the Titan Prisons project. Maybe the MoJ should consider putting up prisoners in tents instead!
You'll probably find out Broon has already bought up and shipped out all the spare tents in this country for Hati
I was just going to say that Dagenham IS just one giant prison but James beat me to it!
Damn! Third in the queue to say that Dagenham is one big prison.
I went there last year - for professional purposes - it's horrible.
wv: permaids - like mermaids but with a 'p'
Fact.
WR: And there was me thinking that rabbits get up early!
