Tories eye private route for inmates
By James Boxell, Home Affairs Correspondent, Financial Times
The private sector would be handed a far bigger slice of the £3.2bn prisons and probation market as part of plans being drawn up by the Conservative party to overhaul the criminal justice system, the Financial Times has learned.
Dominic Grieve, shadow justice secretary, wants the private and voluntary sectors to take over the post-prison rehabilitation of all but the most hardened criminals in an attempt to drive down high levels of reoffending. His team is also examining whether a Tory government should bring in private companies to run all young offender institutions.
