It's a fair cop guv, but you can't catch me because I'm the laughing gnome...

A worried looking Ruth Turner and a laughing Lord Levy. It is understandable why Ruth Turner is looking worried, because a police investigation into her perverting the course of justice is a serious matter. I fail to understand why Lord Levy thinks it is all amusing, because his asking Ruth Turner to lie to the police is not only attempting to pervert the course of justice but also means that he was involved in a conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

I think that Ruth Turner is naive to be shocked that Levy asked her to lie and try and change the version of real events. Tony Blair lied over the Iraq war, Lord Goldsmith lied about it being legal. There is this convention in the Houses of Parliament that a member cannot call another member a liar when it is quite obvious that the member is a liar. I think that it is time that this convention is consigned to history and we have honesty in government. This is why Lord Levy is denying any wrong doing, it is common place to lie. In the same way that it has been common place for centuries to buy honours.

What is wrong with this affair is now that the police have handed the case file to the Crown Prosecution Office, it will be the political and not legal decision of Lord Goldsmith whether the offenders should be charged and then prosecuted. I do not remember one case of mine ever being referred to a politician whether I should be charged. The decision was always taken at police station level. And justice was served. The same in this case, the decision to charge and prosecute should rest with the police. So far, John McTernan, Tony Blair's Head of Political Operations in Downing Street has dodged police inquiries. Whenever the police suspect a gang of criminals or terrorists in the past, they take them to separate police stations and questions them separately to avoid any opportunity of collusion. This is what should have happened here, and should still happen now. The police should be free from political interference and allowed to do their jobs properly.

I seem to recall reading something about this once, but cannot remember the details.
