I can't help thinking that if the Home Office had concentrated more on checking the security credentials of illegal immigrants obtaining jobs in the private security sector, and concentrated less on the effort to increase internment for suspected terrorists from 28 to 56 days, then they might have seen the wood rather than the trees?

She will in the time honoured fashion, a/ blame the civil service b/ place the blame on new measures and "teathing problems" c/ blame the previous government or if that fails the Tories.
And then claim that they are bringing in "new measures" to ensure that this doesnt happen again.
In short throw the shit at everyone an hope it sticks to them & not you.
I wonder just where they were all working, guarding paintings in the National gallery or at nuclear power stations and the like.
Just how do you check the background of an illegal immigrant anyway? Seems citizens with some childhood misbehaviour on their record would get turned down and someone without a record gets the job? Is it like that or am I too cynical?
I dont think it is only Jaqui Smith who should be in the dock on this.
But also who was in charge of the Home Office when they were drafting the Private Security Industry Act 2001.
As this is the Act causing her all this grief.
Fancy not including a clause to cover who should be responsible for checking that licenced security personnel have the right to work/live here.
