And there was me thinking I had created the problem...
The leadership is creating problems for itself, though. Just before Christmas, it announced that all prisoners serving less than four years in jail would be given the vote. This idea is, understandably, loathed by Tory MPs.
But the Coalition announced it having made no effort to consult them about the matter.
Backbenchers have reacted with predictable fury.
A senior one tells me that the Government has acted with ‘complete contempt’ for the views of its own MPs.
Tory rebels have already scheduled a debate in Westminster Hall on Thursday to express their displeasure.
One respected Tory tells me we’ll see that ‘Clegg is -losing his voters [a reference to the by-election that day] and Cameron his MPs’.
And unless they start talking to me very soon, the problem is only going to get a lot worse.
