Gordon Brown scuppers prisoners' 37.5% pay rise
Gordon Brown scuppers prisoners' 37.5% pay rise
"A controversial plan to increase pay rates for prisoners while ministers are being deluged by the row over the 10p tax rate abolition was scrapped yesterday on the direct orders of Gordon Brown.
The Prime Minister intervened to overrule the Prison Service Management Board after learning that it had given the go-ahead to increasing the minimum pay rate for an employed offender from £4 a week to £5.50".
Prisoners should earn pay rise, says Brown
"Gordon Brown confirmed today that he personally intervened to block plans to increase prisoners' pay rates by 37.5 per cent - their first rise for more than a decade".

"We are asking nurses, police officers and prison staff and teachers all to accept pay rises of 2 per cent-3 per cent; I do not think we can sensibly or even reasonably say prisoners should get a pay rise of 38%."
Ok so just give everyone in the public sector a flat 150p rise I'm sure that would make all public sector workers, MPs included much happier.
Pardon my ignorance, but what the fuck is anyone supposed to do with 4 pounds a week, or even 5.50 for that matter. I imagine no-one smokes inside! Isn't it illegal to make someone work for 4 pounds?
Ok so they are not forced, but how does refusing to work affect parole entitlement???
If you ever wondered what a govt run by the Daily Mail and its readers would be like, well now we've got it.
Broon just wants to look tough in the sight of the Daily Mail just before tomorrow's elections. So we have this really mean-spirited and very low decision. If you want to reform people, you can start by treating them as human beings, then maybe they'll feel they're a part of society.
