Madeleine: Parents now treated as suspects by police

The Guardian this morning still refers to Madeleine's disappearance as a kidnapping. I think that this is an unfortunate choice of term. And, still refers to Madeleine as being 4 years old. She was 3 years of age at the time of her disappearance. I found this bit interesting: "The McCanns, who are still in Portugal, are planning a media event on Saturday to mark 100 days since Madeleine's disappearance". I trust that the media are planning to ask the McCanns some very probing questions, along the lines of the German journalist who was criticised for daring to seek the truth? Unfortunately, the link to the Marie Claire website did not produce the interview with Kate McCann, however, "She told the Marie Claire website of her frustration that time was passing without a major breakthrough by police". I hope your frustration will be remedied, Kate, but I suspect that the breakthrough by the police will not be the kind that you were looking for.

I know I shouldn't laugh, but Obsolete led me to this parody of Gerry McCann's diary.

Gerry and Kate McCann are now suspects it is claimed. Hat-Tip to Matthew for this link.

UPDATE: McCanns react to allegations in BBC video. They say that they are not naive. Neither are we. They say that they believe that Madeleine is still alive. However, Gerry appeared to gulp as though even he had difficulty swallowing that lie, that is, that Madeleine was alive when she left the apartment.

Police to question Gerry and Kate McCann separately.

Blood samples to be tested at British laboratory tomorrow. Hat-Tip to zinzin for this snippet.

suspects yes, but only reported by a German press agency (M&C just spiders wire stories). Not in any British media yet. That's the next step.

It is beginning to look like the British MSM might have a lot of egg on their faces when the truth of this whole sad affair comes out.

The Mail is Now Runing with

Madeleine parents' anger as police say she 'died in bedroom'

Madeleine McCann was not kidnapped but died in her bedroom, Portuguese police said today.

Senior sources revealed they had "definitively abandoned" the theory that she was abducted and are convinced she died "as a result of negligence or murder".

Officers from the Policia Judiciaria are to re-interview her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, together with six friends.

The group dined together at a restaurant near the McCanns' holiday apartment on the night three months ago when the girl disappeared. Madeleine was three at the time.

A British sniffer dog team which picked up the blood scent yesterday checked cars used by the McCanns and their friends, David and Dr Fiona Payne, Russell O'Brien and partner Jane Tanner, and Matthew and Rachel Oldfield.

It is thought the six friends have all been placed under surveillance by British police, following a request from their Portuguese counterparts.

There is more but the cut and paste above is the bit that shows how The Daily Mail is now changing its position on the story.

anonymous 4.33: Thanks for that. I also note that they are backtracking on Madeleine's age from 4 to 3. Its only a minor point, but it's the thin edge of the wedge.

I can understand the anger!

If they really did check up on her every half an hour, it would be impossible to kill her in the room, clean it up, and remove the body in the time.

There's much more to this story than we yet know. Have you ever wondered how come the McCanns have managed to get this whole media campaign off the ground all by themselves, and to keep it in the headlines just after suffering the trauma of losing a child? Do you think you would have the strength and calmness of mind to orchestrate such a professional and streamlined campaign in such circumstances? I sure wouldn't. Do you ever think to yourself "How come there are thousands of people with issues which they want to raise public awareness of, yet they struggle without success to get the media on board - yet the McCanns have achieved it almost effortlessly! How come they have done it so easily?"
Do you know that the McCanns' media campaign manager is a professional political advisor to the UK government? Now ask yourself, how suspicious does that make you feel?
I think there is something even bigger going on here than even the awful disappearance of that poor child.

John,

I've only just watched the BBC interview, and there are some telling moments that have been covered here. However, do you find Kate's comments towards the end as astonishing as I do? She is asked how she feels about their statements and the statements of their friends being re-examined etc, and more heat focusing on them. And she essentially calls it intrusive and says that sort of attention isn't welcome or desirable. So all the attention and media coverage in the world is fantastic so long as the press is towing their line, but the moment suspicion falls on them she turns into Greto Garbo...

david: I noticed that as well, and thought it was a bit cheeky. Like other "media stars", use the media to create the desired image, show a photo of wrinkles appearing and it is an invasion of privacy.

Compare and contrast the following 3 statements -

1 - discovery of specks of blood in the bedroom where Madeleine was sleeping shortly before her fourth birthday - from The Times Online

2 - McCann, 39, has told police that he last saw Madeleine in her bed shortly after 9pm - The Times Online

3 - Blood in the McCann’s’ bedroom Traces of blood from a dead person, presumably from little Madeleine, have been discovered on a wall in the bedroom that was occupied by the McCann couple - from the Mirror.co.uk

The first statement does not specify which room Madeline was in. The second states Madeline was in her (own) bed and the third states that the blood was in the McCann’s room. So which room was she in for part or all of the time?

This would mean that the killer had to get into the apartment between ‘shortly after 9pm’ when Mr McCann says he last saw Madeline, presumably in the children’s room, take her into the McCann’s room, inflict an injury on Madeline that did not cause her to make any noise (assuming the blood belongs to Madeline), or wake up the other children, clean up the mess, and be out of the apartment, but close enough to the apartment to be seen by one of the McCann’s friends at ‘about’ 9.15pm, which would leave a window of opportunity to carry this out of about 10 minutes maximum.

Please can the police of a jounralist ask the McCann's about this

Diário de Noícias, 8 August 2007:

"Wiretaps confirm Madeleine's death"

New searches on land and at sea over the past two days

The interception of communications -- telephones (cell and land lines) and emails -- realized during the recent operations undertaken by the PJ and the British police of Madeleine's parents and the "nuclear family" has been the determining factor for the investigators to conclude that the British child died in the apartment in which she was sleeping, with her siblings, on the night of 3 May in Praia da Luz.

The police continues to focus attentions in the local area, far from the watchful eyes of locals and, especially, journalists. For at least the last two days there have been new searches on land and the waterfront, particularly in the Lagos area, with the help of British dogs and the GNR.

According to a police source, these searches will be intensified in the coming days. What is certain is that Madeleine's parents as well as other family members and friends that are in England will return to be interviewed by the Department of Criminal Investigation in Portimão, but it was not revealed what their quality (status) will be. From what DN can determine, PJ intends to hear them once again in order to clarify the differences between various statements. Kate's parents, reportedly, are in the Algarve to "be with" the couple and their twins.

Remember that, about a week after Madeleine's disappearance and after the PJ had wanted to clarify the version of abduction presented by the parents, Gerald McCann remained in the police station for more than 13 consecutive hours, leaving a little after 3am.

Kate, also heard that same day, left earlier (10pm), allegedly because she was feeling fatigued. In the next visit to the PJ, among other facts, they will be confronted with the content of phone conversations and emails, as well as results from the search of the grey Renault Scénic which was used by the couple at Praia da Luz.

The McCanns continue to, meanwhile, transmit an image of serenity and confidence in the face of these ongoing investigations. However, yesterday, they did manifest themselves as "very upset" in relationship to the news that the PJ was convinced that their daughter died in the apartment.

Confronted with the vestiges of blood detected in the Ocean Club apartment, Gerry and Kate responded that they didn't have access to results of the forensic search results and affirmed they didn't want to do anything to compromise the investigation.

Swiss paedophile was in Praia da Luz

The alleged relationship between the Swiss paedophile that abducted a girl last weekend and the Madeleine case gained some significance yesterday, given the similarities with a man who spent holidays in the Algarve during the time in which Madeleine disappeared.

The conduct of an individual, owner of a white van that was parked days on end in front of the McCann apartment and which disappeared immediately following Madeleine's disappearance, is highly suspicious. The authorities are in pursuit, without success. It is known that he lived in Spain at the time of (Madeleine's disappearance), but he has disappeared without a trace.

well, the "parents might be the killers" is now in the British media.

http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news_detail.html?sku=2136

MADELEINE McCann’s parents revealed yesterday that they are suspects in her disappearance, but angrily insisted: “We did not kill her.”

Gerry, 39, and Kate, 38, added: “We are livid at the suggestion. We still believe she is alive.”

The Torygraph is reporting it, but is still being defensive of the evil pair:
