Prisoners to record bedtime stories for children
Prisoners will soon be able to video themselves reading bedtime stories to send home to their children.
The pilot scheme, called Storybook Dads, was unveiled as the ribbon was cut on the refurbished library at Saughton Prison in Edinburgh.
The new facilities will allow fathers to be recorded on DVD reading stories which will then be sent home to help them "bond" with their children. If successful the scheme could be extended to other jails.
The initiative follows criticism earlier this month of the new Addiewell Prison in West Lothian, where inmates have en suite cells with flat screen televisions and can order their meals in advance.
The library at Saughton has also been supplied with laptops, a wider range of books and for the first time has a trained librarian to help inmates get the most out of the facility.
