'Fare-theft' bus driver walks free after employer admits miscalculation

'Fare-theft' bus driver walks free after employer admits miscalculation

A bus driver accused of stealing £21.60 in fares has walked free from court after her former employer realised it had mis-calculated her takings and she had committed no crime.

Catherine Bates, 39, was arrested in February after her employer Travel de Courcey claimed she had pocketed customers' money.

The bus firm said she had stolen the cash by handing out tickets to customers and not declaring the payments at the end of her shift.

But after an eight-month legal ordeal costing £10,000 of taxpayers' money, it has finally emerged a simple accounting error was to blame for the discrepancy.

Comment: I think the bus company should be billed for the £10,000...

I hope she sues them for defamation, false arrest, and anything else a good lawyer can think of!
