Woman cleared to sue Lotto rapist
A retired teacher has cleared the final legal hurdle standing in the way of her bid to claim compensation from a serial rapist who won £7m on the lottery.
The 78-year-old woman was told by a High Court judge on Tuesday that she can go ahead with her claim against 59-year-old Iorworth Hoare.
She wants damages for the psychological injuries she suffered after he attacked her in Roundhay Park, Leeds, in 1988.
Hoare was convicted of attempted rape and jailed for life in May 1989.
He had six previous convictions for rape, attempted rape and indecent assault and spent 16 years in prison.
He bought a winning Lotto Extra ticket while on day release from prison in August 2004 and now lives in a £700,000 mansion in Ponteland, Northumberland.

Silly name too...
Jus sayin.
WR: You would have thought he would have changed it by deed poll. I am amazed he stayed in the country when he could afford to escape abroad where the life licence does not apply. But, he could never return or he would get recalled to prison.
The man is evil and I feel for the victims. However, has he not done the time? and what he does afterwards is his own affair, as long as it is legal.
Should then, any victim of crime be able to claim if they find out the criminal has reformed and done well?
Just a thought.
alex: Originally, the High Court rejected her application because she was suing out of time. The HofL decided the time limit could be circumscribed in exceptional circumstances. I fail to see what the exceptional circumstances are. Unless she is going to claim a 14M to 1 shot is exceptional?
Did she ever recieve compensation? and what would that be today if paid out?
Seems 14m to 1 is the reason.
Does that mean all the other victims are due some cash?
He'll be skint at this rate!
alex: She received £5,000 from the Criminal Compensation fund.
It could mean that the others might want their share if she is successful. I suspect he will offer some money in an out of court settlement.
I recall she said it was not about the money...
It sounds like it's better to be raped by a future millionaire than a pauper...
