No wonder the police have started to suspect the McCanns

BBC: MAN'S DESCRIPTION
White
5ft 10ins
Medium build
Short hair
Wearing a dark jacket, beige trousers and dark shoes
Carrying "a child or an object that could have been taken as a child".

Gerry McCann: "We feel sure that this sighting of a man with what appeared to be a child in his arms, is both significant and relevant to Madeleine's abduction," he said.

Times: A family friend of Gerry and Kate McCann has told police she saw a blonde-haired girl being carried away from an Algarve holiday apartment wrapped in a blanket at the time Madeleine is believed to have been snatched from her room...was on her way to dinner with Gerry and Kate McCann when she saw the man close to the open window of the bedroom where four-year-old Madeleine had been sleeping. The girl he was carrying was wearing pink pyjamas, the same as Madeleine's.

So, a family friend, who, conveniently, was several hours late going to dinner with the McCanns, says she sees a man by the McCanns flat, outside of an open window, with a blonde-haired, sleeping girl, wearing pink pyjamas, and she wasn't suspicious what this stranger was doing with her friend's 3 year old daughter?

Isn't hindsight wonderful with a £2.5M reward at stake? A possible vague sighting gets clearer and more colourful and more elaborate with each telling...just like in Chinese whispers.

Gerry McCann's mistake in seeking to control the mainstream media was that he forget to take into account the blogosphere. He said that the public hold the key to this mystery. He's right. All it requires now is for it to unlock his mind.

This story just gets ever more bizarre.

My instant thoughts on this are.

Although releasing news of this sighting in Portugal was against their Law, there was absolutely no reason why the witness could not have made it public immediately on return to England. It's not as if the press would not have listened, is it?

I am not sure how much reliance can be put on its accuracy though. A check on the BBC weather site shows that sunset in Faro tonight is at 20.41, it would have been even earlier on 4th May. So at 21.30, the time of the sighting, it would have been dark. The spotting of "Pink Pyjamas and Blonde Hair" was allegedly close to the open window of the apartment, so it must have been in the side streets. Even if there was street lighting it would not have been possible to identify those colours correctly. It's all about rod cells and cone cells, humans can not identify colours in dim lighting, ask any Doctor and they will be able to explain it to you, except those on Holiday in Portugal it seems.

The Blonde girl was also wrapped in a blanket, so how would it have been possible to even see if she was wearing pyjamas, never mind the colour?

The next day the resort manager was saying he was not sure there had been an abduction, surely they knew what bedding is allocated to each apartment and if a blanket was missing.

amateur sleuth: Doesn't it just. I agree with you about the so-called witness. It would appear that her silence is trying to be explained away by claims that she felt guilty. I wonder if when Gerry McCann came back to England he made contact with this so-called witness or members of his family did and planted the seeds for this sudden "Oh yes, I remember now...". It would appear that more is trying to be made of this than her initial statement to the Potugese police, who I understand do not feel that it is particulary relevant to their investigations. They appear to be taking the view that this is just another example of Gerry McCann trying to take control of the situation, like he has done with the media.

The Portuguese Police must be under tremendous pressure.

We are talking about ordinary policemen here. The McCann family keep issuing conflicting and confusing statements to the press, they are working under the spotlight of the World's media, they have multi Millionaire business men creating confusion by offering large bounties, they have to contend with a team of Lawyers flown in from London and funded by the Leaving No stone Unturned fighting fund, put up with diplomatic pressure as Gordon Brown has decided to interfere with their investigation and Now the Pope is about to get in on the Act.

I would have thought all this is likely to make their job of Finding Madeline more difficult, not less. Perhaps someone wants it that way.

I agree with all of your points. The British media have accused the Portugese police of operating a smoke screen. This may or may not be accurate up to a point. However, I believe that a bigger distraction is being created by Gerry McCann. What is he trying to hide?
