Tens of thousands of criminals to be spared short jail terms
Criminals sent to prison for less than a year should be let off with a community punishment instead, the Government's sentencing advisers has said.
The independent Sentencing Advisory Panel also said that there should be a presumption that thieves, burglars and anyone convicted of dishonesty should not receive a jail term.
Call me cynical. But just when the government decides it wants to allow those convicted prisoners serving 12 months or less to have the vote, they want to do away with sentences of 12 months or less?
