Muslim gangs 'force inmates to convert'
Muslim prison gangs are trying to force other inmates to sign up to Islamic radicalism, prison officers said.
Extremists at high security HMP Whitemoor in Cambridgeshire were pushing a "strict and extreme" interpretation of Islamic practice, inspectors were told.
Chief Inspector of Prisons Anne Owers said: "There was a perception among officers that some Muslim prisoners operated as a gang and put pressures on non-Muslim prisoners to convert, and on other Muslim prisoners to conform to a strict and extreme interpretation of Islamic practice.
She found staff were reluctant to tackle "inappropriate behaviour" and was told Muslim prisoners were able to "police themselves".
She was told: "The new gang are the Muslims. The Muslim group is a big group and others are looking for protection.
"Those who are isolated are looking for protection and so are the ones converting as they won't get help from screws".
There will be some truth in this report. However, psychologists and sociologists might remember My Geranium Is Subversive and how prison officers perceptions of an innocent activity were way off the mark.

Registered sex offenders are well monitored. Do prison officers have the time to monitor and prevent Muslim pressure groups in prison ?
As someone who has a loved one "banged up" in Whitemoor, I have to say that there is a lot of truth behind this.
The prison officers are terrified of putting a foot wrong and losing their jobs in this hotbed of political correctness, making the lives of other prisoners difficult to say the least. There is one rule for the average inmate and totally different ones for the Muslims.
It's only a matter of time before there is some kind of race riot in there so people can tut, shake their heads, claim it's terrible....
and still do nothing about it.
Mustn't upset the mozzies, now. Make the screws wear turbans so they don't feel isolated.
