What a Carry On Jacqui...
I'm celebrating with a spliff and a can of beer...
Peers throw out 42-day detention
The government's plans to extend terror detention limits to 42 days have been heavily defeated in the House of Lords.
Peers voted to keep the current 28-day limit on pre-charge detentions by 309 votes to 118 - a majority of 191.
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith is expected to make a statement in the next hour in the Commons.
UPDATE:
Ministers drop 42-day detention
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has said that plans to extend terror detention to 42 days will be dropped from the Counter-Terrorism Bill.
I note that Lord Tebbitt of Get on your bike fame supported Jacqui Smith. Perhaps, they should ride off on tandem into the sunset?

jailhouselawyer,
Perhaps it's a move to curry public favour ....
The disastrous financial results of Labour's total lack of regulation has wreaked further damage .... government turned to Japan for advice in it's desperation. Dithering Brown simply implented their advice to nationalize ALL, not a few banks.
Nothing's changed, still muddling along and 'governing' by spin and manipulation, so no surprises there !!!
