Eta prisoner freed for fertility treatment
A convicted member of Basque separatist group Eta has been released from prison in order to undergo fertility treatment.
Elena Beloki, 47, was sentenced to 13 years in jail last November for belonging to the terrorist group, which has killed more than 800 people in a four decade struggle for an independent Basque homeland encompassing parts of northern Spain and southwestern France.
But she was released on bail in July after requesting permission to have in vitro fertilisation claiming it was her last chance to have a child.
The Association of the Victims of terrorism, which supports the families of those harmed in Eta attacks, made a formal complaint but a judge ruled that Beloki could continue to remain free until she completed her course of treatment.
He stated that she continued to comply with her bail conditions and was not considered a flight risk or deemed likely to reoffend.
The ruling has angered victims who are calling for more stringent controls on those convicted of terrorism in Spain.
